JANUARY 2012 NEWS
In February I will be going to India for a month. I am going to learn more about tea, and to put myself in the way of the unexpected!
Like my trip to China in 2010, I am offering you the chance to pre-order tea that I will purchase and bring back. This year the first 20 people who order will receive a
Limited Edition Tea Chest. (We only have 7 left) I have built two so far (pictured below) and will be building the other 18 in the next month before I leave. They will be numbered, and your number will depend on the order in which you purchase the chest.
If you live out of state we will ship your
Tea Chest the second week in March. I will need about a week after my return to fill the boxes with fresh tea from Darjeeling and Assam, along with other interesting things that I find along the way. I have estimated shipping to be around $15-$20 dollars (depending on how you want it sent), but will contact you in march with the exact amount.
I am using PayPal to process the payment for this venture because I want to keep it separate from the other trip finances. Your money will go directly towards the purchase of items in India to fill your tea chest!
You do not need a PayPal account.
TEA HISTORY
Darjeeling is called the Champagne of tea, not because of its taste, but because it must come from a specific region to properly be called Darjeeling. Only tea grown in the remote area of far northeast India may be called Darjeeling. But this area is small and does not produce enough tea to meet the worldwide demand. It turns out that some tea companies have become a bit lax in what they will call Darjeeling, saying that what they mean is the plant originally comes from that area, but is not grown or harvested there. Each year 40 million kilograms of Darjeeling are sold, while only 10 million kg are actually produced!
We purchase most of our Darjeeling directly from a tea estate called Glenburn Estate. During my trip I will visit this estate and will see with my own eyes where the tea is picked, and how the workers are treated. This has been a personal goal of mine for many years, and for me witnessing the estate first hand is far superior to any organic or fair trade certifications.
Sincerely,
