When using antifreeze be sure to keep it in a sealed container away from your pets. Dogs are attracted to the sweet smell and taste, and will often drink if left out or spilled on a garage floor or driveway. If you suspect that your pet has consumed antifreeze, contact your veterinarian immediately. When your dog is outside make sure they are dressed for the cold weather. Some breeds tolerate the cold temperatures better than others. Dogs that are more susceptible to the effects of the cold should wear a coat to keep them warm when outside. Keep your dog safely on a leash when walking on or near a roadway – even if traffic is minimal; you never know when your dog might scamper off in an unexpected direction. Visibility is greatly reduced with snow piled on the sides of the road and icy roads make it difficult for cars and trucks to break quickly. Make sure your pet is wearing their collar with current ID tags – you never know when they might slip out an open door. Ensure your pet’s ID tags have a phone number andaddress. Dogs can lose their sense of smell in extremely cold weather and become lost. Surprisingly winter has the highest rates for lost dogs! Always rinse paws if your pet has walked where salt and ice dissolving granules have been used. These chemicals can be toxic to your dog if enough is ingested. A quick rinse should keep your dog from licking these chemicals off of their paws.
