Make Your Bed

Fall, glorious fall!  Beautiful fall foliage colors seem to be an appropriate reward after having suffered through several weeks of extreme heat this summer.  Mid-summer drought conditions have kept leaves here in Missouri from displaying their best and brightest color.  Despite that, the fall foliage display is still one of Mother Nature's best shows.  The bonus?  Fall foliage color is free and requires no input from the gardener.  If you are planning on adding trees or shrubs to your property, I suggest making fall foliage color one of the traits you consider when making plant selections.
Fall is a great time to start planning for next season.  This is especially true if you are planning on adding a new flower bed for next year.  Spending some time working on prepping your flower beds in the fall, can make spring planting that much easier.
When creating fall containers, a good cold tolerant thriller is one of the keys for having the container look good despite frost.  Graceful Grasses® Blue Mohawk® Juncus is one plant that would be great for use in fall containers.  It is hardy to zone 5 and prefers sun.  It performs well from spring into fall and is excellent in the landscape as well as containers.  To learn more about growing perennials in containers, click here.
This simple combination has good cold tolerance - it will tolerate light frosts.  It will also perform well in spring and summer.  This container can truly take you from spring deep into fall. The combination of Graceful Grasses® Blue Mohawk® Juncus and Supertunia®Vista Silverberry Petunia is great in a classic urn, or almost any other style of container.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and pink is everywhere.  Invincibelle® Spirit Hydrangea ishelping the cause, not only in October, but whenever you purchase it.  You will be helping support breast cancer research, as well as buying a fantastic plant.  It is hardy to zone 3 and because it forms flowers on new growth, it will flower reliably.  Place it in a part sun to sun location.
We are projected to have our first frost sometime this week.  While I'll be sad to see my frost susceptible plants headed for the compost pile, I'm ready to start prepping for next year.  It seems like every year I have at least one bed I am working to renovate.
This year, I will be tackling the 'Limelight' Hydrangeabed.  The bed wasn't necessarily bad this year, it was more a bit lackluster and not up to the standard of years past.  The lawn has also made a grand effort to reclaim parts of the flower bed.  I really need to get some kind of bed edging installed.  As soon as we get enough rain to soften the soil, I will be out digging away.  I can't wait!
If you haven't already done so, join our on-line gardening community on Facebook and Twitter.  We love seeing what you have growing in your gardens or what you're planning for next spring.  The fall issue ofProven Beauty®, our free on-line magazine is also available now.  Let us know what you think.
Happy Gardening.

Kerry lives and gardens in central Missouri on 10 acres, half of which is a rocky wooded hillside. She and her husband bought their house in 2005.  They now live mere miles from the small family farm where she grew up, near her hometown of around 300.  Both of her grandmothers and her mother loved flowers and passed this passion on to her.  She expects her garden to continue to grow as she has time to add to and improve existing beds.  Kerry has a BS in Horticulture from the University of Missouri and an MS in Horticultural Science with a minor in Plant Breeding from the University of Minnesota.  After graduation she lived for 5 years on the Central Coast of California before returning to the Midwest.
